Temporary Tag Information

Dealer Temporary Tags

Dealerships will report and print temporary tags through Dealer Licensing Online Services. Temporary Tags are now Print-on-Demand. Some of the advantages include:

  • Purchase temporary tags for $15.00 per tag and sell them to customers for no more than $20.00 per tag; the dealer keeps the $5.00 difference per tag.
  • No more waiting on your temporary tag inventory to be delivered to your dealership.
  • Temporary tag inventory will be immediately available for use, upon payment approval.
  • Temporary tag registrations and tag are print-on-demand, eliminating the task of writing up each temporary tag sale.
  • Temporary tag inventories are available for monitoring, inventory control and research.

NOTE: In order to offer temporary tag services you must sign up to be a WE (web-enabled) dealer through Dealer Licensing Online Services.

Temporary off-highway/APV stickers do not qualify for the WE discount. Dealers purchase temporary off- highway/APV stickers for $7.00 each and may not sell them for more than $7.00.

If you would like to discontinue being a WE Dealer, you will no longer have the ability to offer temporary tag services. Please contact the Dealer Licensing Section to remove your dealerships status as a WE Dealer.

The privilege to purchase and issue temporary tags / off-highway stickers by a dealership is granted by the Registrar of the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, through R.C. Sections 4503.182 and 4519.10.

Order Options


Place a temporary tag order through the dealer online services. You may pay using an Electronic Check (fee) or Credit Card. Once payment is approved, the temporary tag inventory will be available for immediate issue.

By Mail

Download the Request for Temporary Tags/Stickers (form BMV 4381) and mail with payment to the address listed on the request form. Please allow two to four weeks for processing.

Issuance Guidelines

*** A temporary tag may NOT be issued for a salvage motor vehicle. ***

  • There must be a legitimate purchase order for a motor vehicle (R.C. 4517.26) as outlined in the R.C. section 4517.26.
  • The licensed motor vehicle dealer who executed the purchase order may only issue the temporary tag.
  • The purchaser does not have license plates that can be legally transferred to the newly purchased vehicle.
  • Dealers are NOT permitted to charge more than $20.00 per temporary tag and NOT more than $7.00 per off-highway / APV sticker.
  • Dealers are NOT permitted to issue a second temporary tag to any individual.
  • Each dealer is responsible for inventories consigned to their dealership.
  • A replacement temporary tag may be issued to the purchaser if they report their tag has been lost or damaged prior to the expiration of the original temporary tag.
Temporary Tag Inventory
  • All temporary tag inventories will be valid for only three years from date of consignment.
    NOTE: Temporary tags not reported or unused within the three years will be deleted from the dealer system and NO refunds will be issued.
  • There are auto delete dates next to each inventory online. Each individual inventory will show the total number of temporary tags unreported and the total number temporary tags reported to assist in inventory control.
  • Records must be maintained and easily accessible for a period of three years (O.A.C 4501:1-3-04).
