Salesperson License

All employees who offer for sale, display for sale, sell, or offer for lease, motor vehicles for a licensed motor vehicle or leasing dealer. Licenses are renewed bi-annually.
Applications shall be denied for reasons listed in Ohio Revised Code 4517.12 and Ohio Administrative Code 4501:1-3-09 which include:

  • A conviction of ANY fraudulent act (misdemeanor or felony), regardless of the conviction date, related to selling or dealing in motor vehicles.
Following the issuance of a license, violation of any provisions of section 4517.171 of the R.C. could be subject to revocation of the license by the Registrar. The licensee may appeal the action of the Registrar to the Motor Vehicle Dealers Board. Notification of an administrative hearing shall be given to the licensed holder in a timely manner upon notification to the Board of such violations.

Applicants must submit an application immediately upon being hired by a dealer, and are prohibited from offering for sale, displaying for sale or selling motor vehicles until licensed. Applications must be complete and notarized.

All applicants must submit:

  1. Motor Vehicle Dealer Salesperson License Application (BMV 4301 above)
  2. Applicable fee(s) payable to: Treasurer State of Ohio
  3. Criminal History Record (see Criminal History Record Requirements)

Duplicate, Renewal/Transfer or Transfer/Reinstatement

  • Duplicate: Persons whose current license is lost, mutilated or destroyed may apply for a duplicate license.
  • Renewal/Transfer: Persons who need to renew and transfer a license from one dealership to another.
  • Transfer/Reinstatement: Persons who hold a valid Ohio Salespersons License may transfer it license from one licensed dealership to another or reinstate a license if rehired after leaving a dealership. A transfer is not necessary if the salesperson is simply moving to another dealership owned and operated by that same corporation, even if it is located in another county.

For the circumstances described above, applicants must submit:

  2. Applicable fee(s) payable to: Treasurer State of Ohio

 

Special Sales Event Information

All persons wishing to sell at an approved sales event must hold a salesperson license prior to the event. Each salesperson shall carry the license and exhibit upon demand to any inspector of the bureau, pursuant to O.R.C. 4517.10.

    NOTE: Writing “SALES EVENT” at the top will help us know to make your application a priority. Incomplete and/or illegible applications will result in a delay in licensing.
  2. Applicable fee(s) payable to: Treasurer State of Ohio
New/First Applicants

Persons who have not held a valid Ohio Salespersons License during the past 12 months are considered new/first applicants and must submit the items listed above as well as a Criminal History Record (see Criminal History Record Requirements).

Please see descriptions above. The dealer holding the event may expedite the process of transferring and/or renewing a salesperson license by using our online services. Payment may be made by using electronic check.
